I got my cat Solomon from a rescue centre three years ago. He is now six years old. He was very big when I got him and eating his way through four sachets of whiskers and a bowl of biscuits a day. I had him weighed and he came in at 14 pounds so I cut his food down to two sachets and a bowl of biscuits. At his next weigh in he was 16 pounds, so now he is on one sachet and a bowl of biscuits and now he weighs 17.5 pounds. He only goes out at night and only until about 11.30 when I bring him in for the night. I throw a ball around the house and drag toys around, the only one losing weight is me! He has been on senior cat food (meat) for about 18 months and it is not making any difference. I'm sure he is not being fed anywhere else as he is very wary of people as he was abused in his previous home. Apart from that the vet said he is a very healthy fat cat, for now.
Any ideas of how to get him a bit thinner?.
Many thanks,
Mandy
From the sound of things, I think the culprit here could be the ‘big bowl of biscuits’ as you’ve not mentioned reducing the amount of dry food he gets at all. I suspect that as you’ve cut down his wet food sachets, he’s simply compensated by eating more dry food. Therefore I’d suggest restricting the amount of dry food he eats by leaving his bowl empty for reasonable periods of the day rather than rushing to refill it every time it runs out. Cats are naturally intermittent feeders, and it will do him no harm at all to be without food for a few hours every day. Hopefully this will do the trick, but if not, you could also try swapping his senior food for a prescription diet food from your vets as these are much more effective at shifting stubborn excess weight.
Best wishes,
